Student Scale “Mount Everest” raising over £1,000 for Good Company Bruton

We are proud to announce that students from Coombe House have raised a remarkable £1,058.44 for local charity Good Company Bruton through an ambitious and imaginative fundraising challenge.
Inspired by their unique hillside location, the students set themselves the challenge of collectively climbing the equivalent of Mount Everest—an astounding 49,700 steps. Using the house’s 48-step staircase, each of the 35 Coombe boarders climbed it 35 times, with enthusiastic support from pupils in other boarding houses who joined in to help them reach—and even exceed—the summit.
In true Everest spirit, the pupils decorated the house with handmade tie-dye flags in the style of a Himalayan base camp and learned about the different stages of an Everest expedition, celebrating each milestone reached. The event culminated in a joyful family party on the lawns, with a pizza oven, outdoor games, and the entire Coombe community coming together to recognise the students’ phenomenal efforts.
All funds were raised via a dedicated JustGiving page, with the total amount of £1,058.44 going directly to Good Company Bruton, a local organisation committed to supporting the people of Bruton through community outreach, meals, and social initiatives.
James Hood from Good Company Bruton shared his gratitude “Good Company was surprised and delighted to receive such a generous donation from Sexey’s pupils, who have really scaled the heights to help others in their town. It’s great to see young people engaged in supporting their community in this way. Their efforts are to be applauded.”
Steve Clayson, Headteacher at Sexey’s School, said “I’m incredibly proud of our Coombe House pupils for their creativity, teamwork, and commitment to such a worthy cause. This event not only demonstrated physical endurance but also showed the compassion and generosity that defines our school community. Their achievement goes far beyond numbers—it’s a testament to what young people can do when they come together with purpose and heart.”
The event stands as a powerful example of how young people can take initiative, challenge themselves, and make a meaningful difference in their local community.
