Music is a thriving subject within school life at Sexey's with an eclectic and varied range of activities on offer. The school values music for the enormous benefits it can bring students. It can build confidence and a sense of camaraderie through teamwork and personal skills and practise, as well as aiding their learning abilities.
Students are taught a fundamental knowledge of music from year 7-9 and are encouraged throughout this time to take part within concerts and music exams, before perhaps moving onto study GCSE music or just continue performing and playing for personal enjoyment.
We encourage and support students in their endeavours of learning a musical instrument. We have a strong team of peripatetic teachers that provide tutoring in many different instruments. The lessons are half an hour in duration and rotate times each week so that students do not miss the same academic lessons each week. With sixth form students we attempt to ensure that their music lessons are timetabled in their free periods to prevent any missed lessons. More information on lessons and our tutors can be found on the Peripatetic Lessons page. If you would like to apply for instrumental lessons the form is available from our document download page. Please note that some lessons are very popular and we may not be able to accommodate you straight away.
The music department is within the original school building, situated where the Headmaster's House was formerly. There are four practise rooms available to be booked for lunchtime practise and is accessible to those with a music fob after school until the early evening. There is a computer suite of Mac's within the music department, fitted with the latest software for composition and recording, as well as all of them being equipped with a midi keyboard and other accessories. The music department also has a small-scale recording studio, fitted with a 24" iMac, AKG professional vocal microphone, mixing desk and other hardware available to record with.
The following extra curricular activities are available:
The music department hosts many different concerts throughout the school year; from whole school organised events, such as the Carol Concert and Speech Day to smaller concerts and gigs that are organised within the department. Every term there is an Acoustic Night down at the Sixth Form Centre where any students (or staff) can come along, perform and enjoy a night of music.
The school has a long tradition to inter-house activities from sport to debating, and music is no stranger to this competition. Once a year the Music Department organise a Junior, Inter and Senior House Music competition, where each house can put forward the talents that they have in music. Students represent their houses with pride and compete with commitment and enthusiasm.
The music department does regular fundraising events for charities. Some of our concerts are dedicated to various charities, but we also organise busking and create a Christmas CD with the Year 7's, for which all proceeds go to charity.
