Year 12 Careers Day Inspires Students with Real-World Experience and Expert Guidance
Year 12 students took part in a highly successful Careers Day, packed with opportunities to develop employability skills, explore future pathways, and engage with a range of professionals from industry and education.
A key feature of the day was a series of mock interviews delivered by local employers, including representatives from Leonardo, Old Mill Accountants, AtkinsRéalis, Heidelberg Materials, Yeovil College, Somerset Skills and Learning, Mildren Building Services, Skill Up Somerset, and members of the local community. Employers were extremely impressed by the students’ maturity, confidence, and communication skills. One interviewer commented that, after conducting similar sessions across Somerset, a student from the school was “by far the best” they had ever interviewed.
Students also demonstrated strong engagement by asking thoughtful and perceptive questions throughout the sessions, further highlighting their enthusiasm and preparedness for the world of work.
Alongside the interviews, students took part in a UCAS login workshop to support their post-18 planning, as well as a series of talks from external speakers. These included insights into careers in engineering, business, and building surveying, along with advice on the skills required for these fields, and opportunities to live and work abroad.
Further sessions covered student finance, the local higher education offer from colleges, and apprenticeships, helping students gain a clearer understanding of the full range of post-16 and post-18 pathways available to them. An interview techniques workshop also provided practical guidance to build confidence for future applications.
Overall, the day was described as a great success, leaving students better informed, more confident, and inspired about their future careers.
