SEND update
Sexey’s PLuS (Personalised Learning Space)
We welcomed in the new school year with not only a brand-new learning space for students with SEND, but a new approach to delivering support. This has been received well by a range of students who are being courageous and resilient in their learning despite the challenges they face.
Our Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) have been working incredibly hard to provide in-class support within year group bubbles, following a regular timetable. This has been something that students are grateful for as they can predict who will be there to support them and LSAs are able to contribute to planning whilst following through a topic.
Many students have been taking part in intervention programmes including, Catch-Up Literacy, Catch-Up Numeracy, Talkabout for Teens and Speech and Language target work. You will have had a letter if your child is taking part in these interventions. Our intervention programme will be expanding as we move into the new year.
Our KS4 and 5 students in Years 11-13 have had their Exam Access Arrangements (EAA) for GCSE/ GCE examinations confirmed. Students in year 10 are going through the assessment stages for EAA as this process was delayed due to Covid-19.
We began a new KS4 Functional Skills course which students have fully embraced. All students on the course have recorded a presentation to their peers with questions which forms part of their overall grade. Many students found presenting a massive personal challenge but with their peers displaying kindness and empathy they were able to overcome their initial fears with excellent outcomes. I am sure you will all join me in wishing students luck as they prepare for their Level 1 Exams in Reading, Writing (23rd Feb) and Maths (24th Feb).
I have been extremely proud of the way that students have embraced the additional changes to SEND provision that Covid-19 has forced upon us. It has been sad for all of us in PLuS that we have not been able to open at social times; however, a real positive from this difficult time has been an increase in the confidence, socialisation, and independence of all students not only in lessons but at social times too. When we can open again, we will be inviting students to join us for targeted activities focused around our Sexey’s 7 Core Values.
From all of us in PLuS, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Please take time to rest and recharge with your families ready to continue to make fantastic progress in 2021!
