Sixth Formers qualify for Student Investor Challenge semi-final

Eight of our Sixth Form students are celebrating as they have qualified for the semi-final of the prestigious Student Investor Challenge, run by the London Institute of Banking and Finance.

The teams were given an imaginary £100,000 to invest on the London Stock Exchange. Over 5,500 teams entered and after three months of following the markets and picking shares, the two Sexey’s teams finished in the top 350. Group of sixth form students

In the next stage of the competition the teams will have to try to predict the future value of certain assets. If they succeed the ultimate prize is an all expenses paid trip to New York.

The successful students were Jacob C, Harry A, Basie R and Charlie S who put their success down to investing in oil and mining stocks and Isabella D, Eliza W, Henry L and Max D.

Commenting on their success, Jacob C said, “We originally invested in less volatile stocks, but sold those when we realised that the riskier ones could yield more profit. We would sell when they started to down turn.”

Isabella D added, “We learnt a lot about what worked and what didn’t as we had to keep our portfolios healthy and profitable, following the ups and downs of the market. We’re really pleased that our dedication has paid off so far.”

Mr David Moon, Business Studies teacher at Sexey’s School said, “It was wonderful to see the students so engaged in the project and they deserve their success. I wish them all the very best for the next stage of the competition.”
