The pages of a website can only hint at what a school is really like; it is people and relationships that matter more than stylish graphics and clever text. I hope, however, that you can get a flavour of what life is like at Sexey’s School from what follows and, as you do, that you will want to visit us.
Our aim at Sexey’s is to support the individual to fulfill their potential both academically and socially. We believe that this is achieved by setting high standards of teaching, learning and care.
We offer a wide range of GCSE subjects and have a proven record of success. In 2013, 100% of students once again passed 5+ subjects at A*-G grade, 70% of students passed 5+ subjects at A*-C grade including English and Maths; almost twice the Government national target. Sexey’s is the Sixth Form College for this area of Somerset and a large number of Sexey’s pupils continue into the Sixth Form and we are joined each year by many others from around South Somerset and beyond. Sexey’s Sixth Form provides an excellent choice of courses and a variety of activities and opportunities to foster independent enquiry and leadership. Nearly all our Sixth Form leavers go on to higher education, most securing places at their first choice courses and universities. This summer, 62% of students achieved A* - B Grades, with over 28% achieving A*-A grades.
In August 2011 Sexey’s became a Church of England Academy, linked with the Diocese of Bath and Wells and the Team Ministry of Bruton, which reflects the Christian nature of the school’s original foundation. We believe that a balanced education should encourage spiritual and moral as well as the academic, practical, aesthetic and physical development of children. While Acts of Collective Worship are based on Christian Values and teaching, we recognise and support the multi-faith nature of our society and encourage the students to be understanding, tolerant and respectful of others.
Sexey’s has approximately 270 boarders, and boarding represents an essential element of the school’s character and mission. Our boarding facilities and the rhythms of the day, the week and the term, reflect this emphasis, so that parents may rest assured that we offer a full boarding programme with the considerable educational and life-skills benefits which that brings.
In September 2008 the school became a Humanities College as part of the Government’s Specialist Schools program. We chose Humanities as our specialism as we feel it not only reflects our shared values and vision but we also feel that it will help to support us in preparing students for worldwide issues such as the global economy, sustainable environment and international dimensions. Whilst the Government places less emphasis on Specialist Schools we continue to embrace these values as they remain as important and relevant to us today as they did then.
We have strong links with the local community and work hard to foster healthy relationships with all our linked organisations. These include the council, local community, DfE and Government, business and industry, the press and media, alumni (Old Sexeians) and friends of the school, which in turn gives valuable opportunities to our students. We recognise the importance of sharing our knowledge and experience with others through our influence on the national stage and through partnerships and other forms of collaboration. Sexey’s seeks to remain one of the leading state boarding schools in terms of size and provision, and we will continue to regard ourselves as a specialist boarding school, maintaining the highest level of provision and care for our boarders at all times. The opportunity for social and personal development which boarding affords is the driving force of the school and will continue to determine our ethos for all students. The Governors and staff of Sexey’s are determined to offer the very best service to our students and parents.
We care about results, but not exclusively. We believe education is about more than grades: it is about awareness of the world, about independent thought, about values. It is about the benefits of team sport, of culture, of academic ambition. It is about learning with enthusiasm. It is about growing up in a caring community where all, staff and children alike, are passionate about what they do. That is what we aspire to and, I am confident, deliver.
Do come and see for yourselves: meet the girls and boys, meet the staff, and meet me. I look forward to welcoming you to Sexey’s.
