On Thursday 8th July, a warm summer evening a Cheese and Wine evening with Auction was held in the Sixth Form Centre at Sexey’s School to help raise funds for students to take part in a school expedition to Tanzania with Camps International to carry out aid work for local communities.
Initial worries that the evening may not be well attended due to low ticket sales were allayed when extra tables and chairs had to be brought in at the last minute. The centre was packed and Chris Brickell, the acting auctioneer got underway with great enthusiasm. There were over 35 lots available ranging from bags of manure to Larmer Tree Festival tickets, a nest of tables from Myakka, spa tickets for Holbrook House Hotel fitness club, goodies from Neal’s Yard Remedies, and lunch vouchers at At the Chapel, Bruton, plus many, many more.
During the interval guests enjoyed some super music by some of Sexey’s very talented Sixth form students Harry Brayne, Ollie Jarvis and Poppy Stevens which added to the wonderful relaxed atmosphere. Guests enjoyed a huge range of delicious cheeses which were very kindly donated by The Somerset Cheese Company, Norseland Ltd and Olive Farm (Babcary) Ltd plus nibbles and olives which were donated by Olives Et al.
By the end of the evening when all the lots had been auctioned, including the remaining cheese on the slates they were served on, the grand total of almost £1800 was raised.
Helen Andrews and Liz Clarke thanked everyone who donated so generously, to Chris Brickell for being so entertaining and helping to raise so much money and, of course, to all the guests who gave so generously.
The next fundraising event will be a fashion show with “Travelling Trends” on Monday 4th October at Sexey’s School, Bruton where ladies high street fashion will be on sale at greatly reduced prices, keep a note in your diary!
