Sport is an integral part of school life at Sexey’s with a broad and balanced range of activities on offer. We value sport for the enormous benefits it brings in terms of motivation, work ethic, team work and interpersonal skills.
Students in years 7-11 take part in timetabled, structured physical education offering high quality teaching in games, athletics, gymnastics, health and fitness and aquatic activities. Students in the senior school take part in games activities on Wednesday afternoons where they are offered the chance to represent the school in competitive team sports.
There is a full range of extra-curricular sports on offer with rugby, girls’ hockey and cross country being the main sports of the Autumn term, football and netball in the Spring term and cricket, rounders, tennis and athletics in the Summer term. Other sports offered throughout the year are badminton, golf, horse riding, swimming and health and fitness. There is a full range of sports to cater for most interests.
We support and actively encourage students to pursue national, regional and county representation in their chosen sports. We regularly have such representation in athletics, cross country, badminton, hockey and rugby. We offer competitive fixture lists across all major school games in all year groups against local opposition as well as independent schools from across the Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire counties. We also take part in local and national competitions such as The Daily Mail Cup in rugby, Centre Parcs National Schools Badminton Championships and The British Schools Karting Championships to name but a few.
The school has a long tradition of inter house activities and each year all students take part in a range of sporting activities in a bid to win the much coveted Bint Shield. Students represent their house with pride and compete with commitment and enthusiasm.
The school has enviable facilities which include a purpose build sports hall with indoor cricket nets, modern swimming pool, multi-purpose gymnasium, 3 netball courts, 4 tennis courts, extensive cross country facilities, 2 hockey pitches, 3 rugby pitches, 3 football pitches, cricket square and pavilion.
While we recognise competitive activities are not for all, students are actively encouraged to maintain healthy and active lifestyles, with sustainability beyond school life. With this in mind, activities in addition to those previously mentioned on offer include kayaking, mountain biking, sailing, abseiling, Pilates, go karting and tae kwon do. Students also have the opportunity to attend a local fitness centre and take part in coaching and officiating courses in sports.
