In his history of Sexey's School, the former Headmaster, John Lello, records that when the School was re-founded at the end of the nineteenth century and moved to its present site on the Cole Road, it occupied land known as "Solomon's Cliff".
Cliff House, a listed building built by Thomas Hannam in 1820 opened as a boarding house in 1892. Behind the facade - a listed building of considerable architectural merit - huge changes have taken place to reflect the needs of generations of pupils but the commitment to high standards of behaviour and courtesy remains. Although much of the old house remains, adding to its charm, two new wings have been added – the latest in 2003.
The House can accommodate 36 girls and 40 boys at no more than 6 to a dormitory. The Dormitories are divided by age group, and the House into a boys’ wing & a girls’ wing. The Health Centre is located on one end of the house and so is easily accessible to students. There is 24-hour health care available and a nurse on hand to offer treatment and advice.
The house is run by Robert and Paula Blake (Houseparents), ably supported by Tim and Kara Clarke (Assistant Houseparents). A number of tutors come in for the evenings to provide additional activities.
