Sexey’s School has been a Humanities College since September 2008. Our status is a crucial part of our drive to provide the best learning opportunities possible for students and we also seek to further strengthen links with the local community.
Sexey’s is founded on strong traditions fostering individuality, responsibility and strong academic progress for all students regardless of their ability. As a specialist Humanities College we seek to build on these strong foundations, but also make qualitative changes to transform the learning experience of our students. The strengths of the Humanities subjects involved (English, History and Geography) are used to raise standards across the school. Ofsted has judged us to be a good school with outstanding features. As a specialist school we seek to complete the transition to being judged as outstanding in all regards.
As a Humanities College we seek to develop students who are reflective, engaged, independent learners who will become caring, compassionate, creative citizens with a passionate interest in local, national and global issues. The Humanities subjects are an integral part of everyday life and gaining a firm understanding of them increases the opportunities for, and horizons of, our students. Sexey’s is the only school in Somerset with Humanities as its main specialism and we aim to develop as a centre of excellence in this area. In addition, Sexey’s is making a statement about the importance of these subjects in terms of developing literacy and higher order thinking skills which will improve learning across all areas of the curriculum. We will help to develop individuals with humanitarian values and a concern for the environment who are confident, tolerant and aware of other cultures.
