Year 7 trebuchet challenge
The hotly-contested Year 7 Design Technology Trebuchet Challenge Final was held at lunchtime today, with contestants battling it out for the overall prize.
After some gruelling final rounds, the ultimate showdown saw Emily Dillon and Issy Creighton’s design take on that of Otis Dennis, with the girls’ cannon projecting furthest at a superb 5.5m (the equivalent of 180m if scaled up to a full size model).
Commenting, Emily and Issy said, “We have been working on our designs for the last three weeks and we’re so pleased to have won! It’s a type of siege engine, based on a French catapult design.”
Design Technology teacher Mr Oats added, “My congratulations go to everyone that took part and especially to the finalists Emily, Issy and Otis. All of the students have worked so hard on their designs, which complement the work they are doing across the curriculum in other subjects, such as their medieval studies in History this year. My hope is that this practical exploration into the workings of a trebuchet will help to bring those studies to life further.”
